Forum - Access Alternatives

I get the current GRP-FACL listserv in daily digest form (which is probably why I read, but don't post).

I'm concerned that with the Forum format, I will lose this option. I've set up both this post and my previous one about membership types for daily e-mail notification. I'll see how that works. It looks like there hasn't been a lot of activity, but maybe that was due to the upcoming IAF conference.

This is an experiment. I want to see if the message is sent by email to those who are subscribed to the forum, in order to answer Ned's concern.

And I just scrolled to the bottom and discovered I can subscribe to instant email notification for the thread (which I did). I wonder what happens when someone starts a new thread.

Every new technology is a learning curve. I've been on this list since it was a newsgroup, and maybe even when it was on the forerunner of Topica.

I like that we can attach documents on this forum.

Try going to "my profile" and "options". I think that's where I saw the option of digests.

I'm just testing to see if this comes through on email directly to me. I agree with the GF thread that if it doesn't come automatically to my email I won't take the time to log on.

If you go to My profile Edit Subscriptions you can set different options for each subscription - it defaults to Instant notification by email. you can set each subscription to none, daily, weekly or instant.

Make sure you click Update if you change any of the options - I didn't and I still got the instant notifications.

Hopefully I will not see this Post until tomorrow. Oh the fun playing with new and more complicated toys.

i don't get it.

i didn't get the others in the threat when i investigated further.
i thought i had it set up for "daily email notifications"
therefore i must have the setting wrong.
the email from gayle was a gmail.com address.
does this mean there's a a kind of electronic "echo" through gmail too?


will i need to basically subscribe to each thread separately? i hope not. the gr-facil daily digest was enough for me.

Well, I was NOT getting e-mails, so I figured I had to register...

(I realized the Forum was up because Gary cc'd me on his reply to a post... thank you Gary!)

When I went to the website and tried to register, it told me I was ALREADY registered... and asked me if I wanted the site to re-send me my password.

So I did, and I was able to log in and see the e-mails online.

Then I found out I was NOT subscribed to the forum... so I did.

I'm sharing this just to let folks know that there may be others in a similar situation (who are not getting e-mails.) I thought I read somewhere that folks were going to be automatically transitioned over... but there may still be some bugs in that process.

At any rate, a great big THANK YOU to the folks who are working hard on this (sometimes a bit nervewracking!) process of transition...

I'm sure it will eventually be worked out. Meanwhile, i wanted to share my experience here in case it is helpful to someone else.

Working to prevent these automated replies from coming in.

Typically, the system looks for certain key words from the subject heading. However, these last few automated replies were using a standard reply format and tricked the system into thinking it was a verified reply.

Everyone, when using the instant email system, please use an email that doesn't have an automated, 'We'll get back to you soon' reply. Also, if you plan on going out of town, please go to 'My Profile', 'Edit Forum Subscriptions' and change your settings to be either 'Daily Notification' or 'Weekly Notification'. That way, it'll help prevent any unexpected 'Out of Office' replies from coming in.

When you email the forum, it doesn't go to a specific user, it goes straight to the thread that is public. Therefore, everyone who is subscribed to this forum or thread will receive the email. If you want to email a specific user, you must either email their personal email or log into the forum and send a Private Message.

The reason why you see their names in the from portion of the email is to let you know who the author is for that specific post. If you reply, again, it'll go straight to the thread and everyone will get an email saying it's from your user since it's your post for this particular topic.

Also, there has been an influx of automated responses from a few users yesterday. Please disregard those messages. Since everything is still brand new here, we're still working to effectively eliminate those responses from reaching your email in the future. Sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused.
